free standing (floating) lugs
What would happen if you used a lug that wasn't fastened into the shell? Maybe a rod or stock threaded at both ends that the tension rods screwed into directly and didn't touch the wood? How would it...

Drums were built like that for centuries, and still are. They are usually called rope-tuned. Same principle.
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
Yep the old rope tuned drum is closer to what I was thinking but with a lug.

You mean like this? www.jagsentertainment.com/ffetlug.htm
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
There's www.sleishman.com/ but I don't think they sell just the hardware. Then there's www.pagedrums.com/page_dr..._store.htm for rope bound floated lugs. Again, I don't think they sell the hardware...

The biggest issue is you don't have independent tensioning of the heads. If you tighten a tension rod on one side of the drum, it affects both heads. It's not considered the best way to go for todays...
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
That's very true. And I don't know of any way around that with a true free-floating lug. Even if one had independent adjustments on each head, every time one head was tightened, it would always pull...
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
Don't some people tune both head the same? I tune my batter heads lower than my ressonant heads but that's just what the guy I bought my kit from suggested. Being my first kit and a newbie I did it...

Quote:What is your goal with this, Debi? Of course some people tune this way. Tuning is all a matter of preference. The only issue is that you'd have no option in the matter. Rudy P.S. I'm still...

I was thinking if we didn't have to drill for all the lugs there would be less vibration induced from other drums in the kit and less buzz etc. Maybe a cleaner sound. I also hate drilling all those...
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
The problem with freefloating is (aside from the lack of independent tuning) that the entire shell is under compression. Listen to a freefloating marching snare: "TACK!" No sustain whatsoever. The...

You've got to take into consideration the super high head tension on marching snares also Mike...that is huge facter there.... Stellar
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
Thanks Stellar, I was gonna mention that the main reason for the full length floating lugs on marching snares is for strength. The heads pull against the base ring (or each other, depending on the...

Stellar, you build that pearl-style "stellarhoopandring" free floater? Don't think I was being critical of your floater for although the vibratory characteristics of free-floatation are debatable, one...
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
No Mike..I was not defending my drum, actually the main reason this drum came about was not for resonant reasons, but more for shell changing capabilities. Dino, the customer, wanted a wood shell, an...

While I don't believe this a free-floater, does anyone know how the new Tama Omni-tune works?
View ArticleRe: free standing (floating) lugs
vectron, the NEW tama omni-tune system is a copy of the Gladstone tuning system. You can tune the top head, the bottom head, and I think both at the same time all from the batter side. Lang reproduces...

I build this free floating snare drum (as the shell and the free floating arrangement).img.photobucket.com/album...010013.jpg It sounded pretty tasty until the shell started to buckle. As far as...

hey debi a question i think no one answered yet is why the pearl free floater has that metal ring. the strainer and butt are attached to that ring, that way there is not hardware on the shell. gregg
